Howdy and Welcome
Drawing nearer and nearer to the Germany study abroad experience, I think that I am most excited to be pushed out of my comfort zone. I have never been across the Atlantic Ocean, so I am prepared to learn new things about others and myself. I believe that the perspective gained by my abroad experience will allow me to have a broader view of the world than just my little East Texas town.
In that same vain, I believe that the most challenging thing for me as we travel to Germany will be the culture shock that comes from exposure to a completely different culture of people. I am prepared to have an open mind, but I fear that some won't have an open mind about me. Bridging the gap between cultures and creating real relationships abroad excites me but will most likely become the greatest challenge I face.
When navigating this new culture, I can see people labeling me as a typical American, which in some sense, they will be right. Personally, I believe that I am so much more than just the country I come from. I would want people to see and recognize my values and my heart as a friend, rather than try to predict my politics and judge me for my heritage. In reflection, I realize that in interacting with people from Germany and surrounding countries, I must give them the same. It will be a more fulfilling experience if I choose to listen and learn about the individual people as I try to experience and learn about their country.
Outside of excitement or fear, I feel proud for taking a leap and doing study abroad this summer. I never thought I would experience anything like we are all about to experience. But now, having taken this leap, I am proud that I have taken a step to make my self a more well rounded person.
At the end of the day, I hope to gain lifelong friends and learn to have a broader perspective, and more grace for all people. As I pursue a career in medicine, no matter who comes into my clinic, I want to be able to be a warm and effective physician. I believe wholeheartedly that this study abroad experience will allow me to provide more personalized care in my future career.
Hello! I totally agree with you about the reciprocal relationship we should have with the German people and culture. As much as we want them to be open to getting to know us, we should be to them! I also relate to what you wrote about your hope for a broader perspective to support your goal to be a great physician. That is also my goal, and I think this experience can only make that more achievable. See you in Germany!
