1: Week 1 Reflection (Kendall Austin)

The simplest things in Germany feel so new and exciting, such as exploring new areas. I really enjoy being around my host family because it feels like we are constantly learning from each other. I love seeing their perspective on things that seem so normal to me.
For me, the most challenging part of the trip so far has been learning the cultural differences. For example, trying to go to the store later in the afternoon, but not realizing that every store would be closed.
I’m enjoying meeting new people and getting closer to the other students on the trip. I think my new friends have given me the largest opportunities for growth because without them I don’t think I would be as confident to experience as much as I already have if I were on my own. It has made me realize that even if I’m busy or nervous, there is always time to do something fun and that not everything has to be extremely serious.

  1. I think you are so right here when you say that having friends around pushes you to do things outside of what you normally would. Having the A&M program is something I am so thankful for as it has made this such a simple transition into life abroad and moves us to make the most of our time!

  2. it is a little humbling when we struggle to do the simplest things we don’t think twice about back in the states. It’s a challenge but it’s fun to try to speak in broken German to order or ask for directions. Even then we still end up getting lost or 7 bus stops in the wrong direction.
