Post 1: After Week 1 Reflection (Victoria)

 Howdy!

What a week it has been! I am thoroughly impressed and excited about my time here in Germany. Although it has only been a week, I already feel like I have created so many lasting memories. So far I am feeling good (and tired) but overall am very pleased with every experience I have gone through.

My host family has been nothing short of amazing. I am so blessed to be staying very close to a friend that lives next door. My host parents, who I like to call Oma and Opa, live right next door to their daughter and their three grandchildren. Even though the grandchildren do not speak English we like to go to their backyard and play games with them or do some gymnastics. Their youngest daughter Leonie made my name in with her stamp collection she loves. The food Oma has been making is immaculate and she comes up to my room sometimes to sneak me a dessert.

Honestly the biggest challenge so far has been trying to stay awake and adjust to the time difference. I am the type of person who needs to be doing everything at every moment or else I will get fomo. So this constant desire to be everywhere all at once inadvertently causes me to lose out on some sleep sometimes. The thing I have enjoyed the most is easily the friendships I’ve made with my friends along the study abroad. Everyone here is so brilliant and inspiring I am so thankful we get to go through all these excursions together as a group.

This opportunity as a whole has already caused so much growth. The idea of putting myself out there with a group of strangers in a completely foreign country has already stirred something within me. Every single experience whether that is getting lost, going to a new restaurant, taking the bus, or even exploring a new city, breeds a new sense of growth. This extreme exposure allows for me to broaden my horizon in various areas. What a blessing this experience has been and will continue to be.

Thanks & gig’em,

Victoria

  1. Howdy Victoria! I am so glad you are enjoying your host home! I think it is so fun that you are bonding with the younger kids in the home. It is so sweet that they are welcoming you into the family like that. I agree with you about being here for only a week and feeling like so much has happened already! So many memories have been and are being created. I am excited for all the ones that are yet to come. I have enjoyed the excursions with you and am so excited to continue this trip with you!

  2. Victoria, I am so glad to have gotten to know you better throughout this first week. Your host family sounds the sweetest; you calling them Oma and Opa is so sweet. I am sure you will get to know them better, as you have a heart that cares for others and loves to learn!
